There are many things to adjust to when you move to a new area and Miami is no exception. One thing that many people find increasingly confusing is the growing number of area codes in the state and how to determine which one is right for the number they are calling. There are several new area codes in the state because of a decrease in available numbers as the state’s population grows. New technology has also affected the number of available numbers, and regions where an area code is used may have to be broken down into smaller areas.
When you are situated in your new Miami FL condo and trying to call your friend on the other side of the state, you may suddenly find that the number no longer works. This is probably due to a new area code that has been implemented in your friend’s region. To further complicate things, some areas in Florida are “overlay areas” where you can make both local and local toll calls. Even those calls that are not toll calls will require you to dial the same 10-digit number including the area code.
One thing you can do while shopping for Miami FL real estate is to learn if the property is in an overlay area. While this won’t completely eliminate the problem of changes in overlay areas, it will reduce the need for knowing every area code for the numbers you call. Making the call through an operator may be necessary, but you should be prepared to pay more for your call when you request assistance. In some instances, the information is provided for free for a certain period of time once the area code has been changed. However, if you haven’t called the number in some time, you may have already missed your opportunity.
One of the most convenient ways to keep up with changing area codes is through the internet. Once area codes are changed, they are typically posted online rather quickly. An up-to-date map of area codes will show you the area code for the location you are searching for. If you aren’t sure of the exact area in the state that you are calling, another approach might be to use the Yellow Pages or White Pages online to look up the person or business that you are trying to call in order to get their current phone number. While these different area codes and ways to dial different numbers in Florida can be frustrating, living in one of our beautiful homes for sale in Miami is worth the extra effort!
